Romeo & Juliet's Hidden Comic Relief: Rosaline

After a heavy, charged scene (that of romeo & juliet meeting on the balcony in her rose garden), shakespeare voices mercutio calling for romeo by talking about rosaline (his former lover). Romeo says that rosaline is beautiful but adverse to love, and it's killing him; He says, she's fair i love (1. 1. 206), but she hath forsworn to love, and in that vow / do i live dead that live to tell it. These characters, in their comic roles, serve as foils for romeo and juliet by highlighting the couple’s youth and innocence as well as the pure and vulnerable quality of their love. There is no sign of rosaline but romeo sees juliet and completely dismissing rosaline from his mind, falls madly in love with her.
